In 1666, Samuel Mashborne, an Oxford student from Brackley, died after being struck by lightening. During the night before his burial, a group of town and university doctors performed one of the first brain autopsies recorded.
In 1700, James Mashborne, an Anglican minister, bought one of the first life insurance policies sold in modern times. Due to his marriage to Ann Blount, James is the only Mashburn listed in Burke's Peerage.
In 1712, Edward Mashborne operated the third known school in North Carolina. He was raised in London by his stepmother Elizabeth and left for America about the time she married Edward Lloyd (whose coffee shop begot Lloyd's of London).
