History of the MGA Website

After being active in several online genealogical bulletin boards (BBS) in the early 1990′s, Steve Mashburn began this site as a Wildcat BBS in 1992. It appeared as the Mashburn Home Page on AOL in the summer of 1994.

In 1996, the site was moved to Avana, an Atlanta-based ISP service, and was renamed The Mashburn Genealogical Archives. The URL’s were http://mashburn.home.avana.net and http://www.avana.net/~mashburn/

When Avana left the home market, the site was moved to Rootsweb and renamed The Mashburn Genealogy Archives in order to get better placement on search engines on the word “genealogy.”

In 2011, the site was moved to its own domain, http://mashburngenealogy.com on GoDaddy servers and Steve began moving his The Master Genealogist (TMG) files into The Next Generation Geneaology (TNG) which will now serve as our genealogical database. WordPress will be used as the content management system (CMS) for the site.

The process has been hindered by (1) Steve’s real life job demands, (2) a GoDaddy snagfu in which several months of work was lost and (3) a feeble mental condition known as old age. Only a small amount of material has yet to be moved over from Rootsweb as of Nov. 23, 2011.
