mga-logo-transparentGenealogical facts cannot be copyrighted; however, but presentation and format can be. For example, the following facts CANNOT be copyrighted:

John Smith died in 1865.
Mary Jones married John Smith in 1856.
William Smith was the son of Mary (Jones) and John Smith.

However, the following sentences CAN be copyrighted since they are original expressions/opinions of the author:

John Smith struggled greatly in the POW camp but died in 1865.
Mary Jones, obviously deeply in love, married John Smith in 1856.
Billy Smith, the wayward son of Mary and John Smith, was a troubled youth.

One should always cite (even if there is no legal requirement) because genealogy without documentation is not genealogy. Don’t be a name collector!
